Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital documents its first case of child starving to death

A child’s body lying on a hospital bed showed the effects of severe starvation, protruding ribs in his chest and extreme thinness, according to the graphic video footage by Ezzedine Lulu, fifth-year medical student who acts as a doctor at al-Shifa Hospital.

He documented the arrival at the hospital in the northern Gaza Strip of the first person to die of starvation.

  • After speaking about the situation that resulted in the death of the child and the failure to save the people of the north from starvation and thirst, he said: “Do not talk to us again about human rights, I do not know where the world has reached in its brutality and cruelty.”

COGAT said Israel’s military is “further reviewing” ways to bring aid into Gaza, particularly the north.

However, aid groups say Israel has actively blocked their operations in Gaza, creating a “man-made famine” in the enclave, according to Refugees International.

Von der Leyen says Cyprus maritime corridor to open this weekend

While on her visit to Cyprus, the EU chief said a sea corridor from Cyprus to Gaza will likely open this weekend, after a pilot shipment takes place today.

  • “We are here because the Palestinians in Gaza need our help and the humanitarian situation there is very tragic,” said Ursula von der Leyen, adding that the sea passageway could be a “radical change” for aid access.

The US plans to help build a temporary pier in Gaza to receive the Gaza-bound sea shipments, President Biden announced on Thursday night.

  • However, the UN and aid groups say sea deliveries are not nearly as efficient as truck shipments, and have urged Israeli authorities to stop blocking aid trucks from crossing into Gaza.

President Joe Biden has announced during his State of the Union speech that the United States will build a temporary pier on Gaza’s coastline to allow aid to enter. The plan has been criticised as “not realistic” and a “distraction”.
Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israeli army attacks on the enclave have killed 78 people and wounded 104 in the past 24 hours.
