The US Senate on Friday voted to reject a motion calling for additional witnesses and documents to be presented as part of US President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, which began January 17.

Forty-seven Democrats and two Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Mitt Romney of Utah, voted for additional evidence, but the motion fell short by two votes, effectively ending the House impeachment which has been ongoing for the past two weeks and beginning the final stage of the impeachment trial.

On Friday, the managers and Trump’s lawyers presented final arguments, following a two-day proceeding in which senators asked them questions in writing.

The trial will end Wednesday with a Senate vote on two articles of impeachment, charging Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Conviction on either count requires a majority of 67 votes, but 53 Republican senators are expected to vote against impeachment, effectively preventing it.
