Iran’s Revolutionary Guard deployed air defense systems in Syria – report

According to the UAE-based news channel, the project is meant to protect IRGC assets in Syria from Israel’s repeated aerial attacks.

Al-Arabiya said that the project is led by Farid Muhammad Thaqa’i, a senior officer of the IRGC Aerospace Forces.

The officer visited the Syrian capital, Damascus, on several occasions in the last few months and met with senior officers from the Syrian Arab Air Defense Force to discuss the project.

The Iranian air-defense systems and related equipment were allegedly smuggled into Syria via several land and air routes by the Quds Force, a key branch of the IRGC which is specializing in unconventional warfare and military intelligence operations.

Western intelligence sources told al-Arabiya that Israel is aware of the Iranian-Syrian air-defense project and is determined not to let the IRGC build its own air defense network in Syria.

In 2020, the SAA and the Islamic Republic of Iran Army signed a cooperation agreement that placed a special emphasize on bolstering Syria’s air defense capabilities. Since then, nothing has been heard about the agreement.

Al-Arabiya didn’t reveal any information on the air-defense systems the IRGC had allegedly sent to Syria, which raises some questions about the credibility of the channel’s report.

  • Israel could use the report to justify more attacks on Syria, as it did with countless similar unverified reports about Iranian activities in the past.

Israel has been waging what it calls a “War-Between-Wars” to hinder Iranian entrenchment in Syria and prevent the transfer of advanced Iranian weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

If confirmed, the deployment of Iranian air-defense systems in Syria would be a testimony to the failure of the Israeli campaign.
