Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz says that while he backs the expansion of surrogacy in Israel, the current political makeup of the coalition will not allow it to move forward.
In a response to a request from the Supreme Court for the government’s position on the issue, Horowitz says that there is no current possibility for the Knesset to pass a new law on the issue, and therefore requests for the court to rule.
Horowitz asks the court to issue a ruling “that expresses the state’s obligation to the right to equality and parenthood of single men and same-sex couples.”
Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the current ban on same-sex couples using surrogacy in Israel is not legal, and that the Knesset must update the law.
