Israel latest: Hospitals ‘collapsing’? Rambam’s COVID-19 department is [just] 1/2 full

Rambam hospital has announced that it will be transferring its coronavirus department to a basement floor, with the transfer beginning next week.

According to figures supplied by the Health Ministry, Rambam hospital’s coronavirus department is currently just under half full, with 49.2% occupancy.

Head of the Organization of Public Health Physicians, Professor Hagai Levine, has testified before the Knesset’s Regulatory Committee, currently in session to debate the provisions included in the upcoming lockdown that is due to come into force tomorrow afternoon, after the government authorized the lockdown earlier today.

“We have to abolish all these regulations,” he insisted. “All they do is damage public health. We have to allow people to travel. Why should a family be prevented from going out on a picnic? What is the problem in that?”

Speaking at the meeting of the Knesset’s Regulatory Committee, MK Ayelet Shaked (Yamina) warned that the government is leading the country into an abyss.

“We are standing right before catastrophe,” Shaked said.

“This government has failed to enforce restrictions on public gatherings – the only regulation that really matters. This government, headed by Netanyahu, has not succeeded in putting a stop to the anarchy that reigns at demonstrations attended by thousands of protesters – the government has failed to put in place an outline for protests, which is now sorely needed.

“I call on Professor Grotto to tell us what the government’s outline is for emerging from this lockdown,” she challenged.

“The lockdown is supposed to end in mid-October, and now Professor Gamzu is saying that the system for breaking the chain of infection will only be in place at the beginning of November. So what will be ready in October?”
