Jeremy Corbyn: West should stop arming Ukraine

Former UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn called on Western countries to stop sending arms to Ukraine during an interview with a pro-Russian Beirut-based TV station, according to The Guardian.

“Pouring arms in isn’t going to bring about a solution, it’s only going to prolong and exaggerate this war,” Corbyn told Al Mayadeen.

“We might be in for years and years of a war in Ukraine.”

  • “What I find disappointing is that hardly any of the world’s leaders use the word peace. They always use the language of more war, and more bellicose war,” he added.
  • The former Labour leader, who was suspended from the party in November 2020 over his reaction to an Equalities and Human Rights Commission report on antisemitism scandals in the party during his tenure, called the Ukraine war “disastrous for the people of Ukraine, for the people of Russia, and for the safety and security of the whole world.”

“Therefore there has to be much more effort put into peace,” he said.

He urged the United Nations to be more involved and said that if the UN was not able to negotiate an end to the war, then the League of Arab States or the African Union should lead talks.

Corbyn, who is the co-vice chair of the Stop the War Coalition, was slammed earlier in the year by Labour leader Keir Starmer, who said of the group in a Guardian interview: “At best they are naive, at worst they actively give succour to authoritarian leaders who directly threaten democracies. There is nothing progressive in showing solidarity with the aggressor when our allies need our solidarity and – crucially – our practical assistance now more than ever.”
