Monkey injured by shrapnel when Gaza rocket hits Ramat Gan zoo

A monkey at the Ramat Gan Safari Park underwent surgery on Saturday after it was injured by shrapnel from a rocket that fell in the zoo.

The projectile hit during a barrage fired at central Israel by terrorists from the Gaza Strip that killed a man in his 50s at his nearby home.

The projectile that struck the zoo was initially thought to have only caused damage to the site, and not harmed any of the staff or animals.

A crested black macaque was found to be hurt with what were initially thought to be unrelated injuries, however x-rays later showed that the primate had been hit with shrapnel from the rocket.

Dr. Yigal Horowitz, chief veterinarian at the animal park, said the monkey underwent surgery to remove the shards.
