Netanyahu planned to revive Assad’s standing on world stage

An Israel Hayom report revealed that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett recently cancelled a regional initiative promoted by his predecessor, Benjamin Netanyahu, to return Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to good standing within the Arab League and the international community.

According to the report, the plan was based on a widely-held belief that Syrian forces had managed to gain the upper hand in the country’s civil war and that the Syrian leader would agree on having Iranian militias leave his country as a conciliatory gesture.

  • Israel Hayom said it had acquired information that the plan was initiated in Israel during at a summit held three years ago in Jerusalem attended by Israeli, US, and Russian national security advisers.
