Over 550 British Jews signed a petition calling on the United Kingdom government to block the appointment of incoming Israeli ambassador and Likud lawmaker Tzipi Hotovely, the Jewish Chronicle reported on Tuesday.

Hotovely was briefly appointed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Settlement Affairs Minister in Israel’s new government before accepting his offer to serve as ambassador in London.

She also served as Diaspora Affairs Minister in the previous government and Deputy Foreign Minister between 2015 and 2020, and is known for her staunch opposition to the two-state solution and advocacy of unilateral annexation of the West Bank.

“As Settlements Minister, Hotovely shares responsibility for upholding Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank – which she has called ‘a myth’ – and she is a leading advocate for annexation,” the petition quoted in the report, which was addressed to the Foreign Office, reads.

The petition, backed by Na’amod – a fringe British-Jewish organization that campaigns against the occupation and in favor of Palestinian rights – added that Hotovely’s “values and politics have no place in the U.K., and if the Israeli government believes they do then the British government must send a clear message otherwise by refusing her nomination.”

Hotovely has been known to cause stir with the Jewish diaspora, unlike her predecessor, Australian-born incumbent Mark Regev.

In 2017, Hotovely was made to apologize after stating that American Jews live “convenient lives” and “never send their children to fight” in the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan.
