Report: MKs from the Likud plan to oust Netanyahu

A number of Knesset members and ministers from the Likud have discussed the possibility of recruiting 61 MKs for a constructive vote of no confidence and establishing a government without going to elections, Channel 13 News reported on Monday.

  • The move, according to the report, will be launched towards the end of the ground operation in Gaza and ahead of Benny Gantz leaving the coalition, as he has promised to do once the war ends.

The report also indicated that the Likud members who will cast the vote will decide on an agreed upon candidate from the party for the position of Prime Minister, instead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and that candidate will undertake not to run in the next elections, in order to calm any opposition from other members.

At the same time, according to the report, the chance of the move being successful is low since only 10 Knesset members on behalf of the party expressed willingness to promote the move, while at least 15 Knesset members from the Likud would be needed to carry out such a move, according to the law.

  • An additional factor that may impede the move is the fact that the move requires the resignation of ministers who left the Knesset within the framework of the Norwegian Law and the conducting of coalition negotiations in a short time.
