Over a century ago the artist Isaaс Levitan created a phenomenon that will be later named the psychology of the Russian landscape. Levitan did not just paint nature, he depicted the human soul, contemplating nature with it’s fears, joys, hopes and doubts. Years later the most eminent Russian film directors—Sergei Eisenstein, Andrei Tarkovsky, Aleksandr Sokurov, Sergei Solovyev, Andrei Zviagintsev and others—used Levitan’s visual language in their works.
