The White House has condemned the conduct of anti-Israel protesters in Washington, DC, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave an address to Congress on Wednesday.
Groups of protesters clashed with police outside the Capitol building, sprayed pro-Hamas graffiti outside Washington’s Union Station, and burned the US flag and an effigy of Netanyahu.
Also in attendance were Jewish protest groups, carrying signs with slogans including “anti-Israel is not anti-Semitism”.
- “Identifying with evil terrorist organisations like Hamas, burning the American flag, or forcibly removing the American flag and replacing it with another, is disgraceful,” deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement.
- “Anti-Semitism and violence are never acceptable. Period. Every American has the right to peaceful protest. But shamefully, not everyone demonstrated peacefulness today,” he added.
