Watch: Israeli army admits 17 troops were killed or wounded in southern Gaza attack

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on March 29 that a soldier was killed and 16 others were wounded as a result of an attack by the Hamsa Movement in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the IDF identified the slain soldier as Sergeant First Class Alon Kudriashov of the Commando Brigade’s Egoz unit. It also said that the other wounded soldiers were also from the same unit.

Kudriashov was killed and 16 other troops of the Egoz unit were wounded, including six seriously, after a Hamas fighter fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a building used as an encampment near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Hamas’s military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, published footage of the deadly attack, showing the rocket-propelled grenade hitting the building where the Egoz troops were situated.

  • Battles in Khan Younis raged in the last few days. The IDF will likely report more losses from the city and nearby areas in the coming days.

On March 30, Hamas reported another deadly attack against the IDF in Khan Younis. Its military wing said that its fighters blew up a Merkava main battle tank using an explosive device in the center of the city, killing or wounding the crew.

The casualties were evacuated by three Israeli military helicopters.

  • Including the last casualty, the IDF has lost 254 soldiers and officers since the start of ground operations in the Gaza Strip last October. The exact number of Israeli troops wounded during these operations remains unknown, but it is believed to be way above 1,400.

The IDF will likely face stronger resistance from Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Khan Younis and other areas in southern Gaza in coming weeks as this direction is critical for Israel’s planned offensive on the area of Rafah on the Strip’s border with Egypt.

It’s worth noting that the Israeli war on Gaza has so far claimed the lives of 32,623 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and left more than 75,092 others wounded.

  • In addition, the war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60% of the Strip’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the United Nations.
